We are reviewing the features of one of our R-Series press brakes, specifically our popular 12′ x 242-ton model. The standard CNC control on our R-Series is the Delem DA-52 numerical control (with an optional upgrade to the Delem DA-56 graphical control).

The R-Series comes standard as a three axis machine (Y1, Y2 and X) but can optionally be increased to five axes (adding motorized R axis and CNC crowning). Manual crowning is also an option. CNC crowning is calculated and applied through the control when you program the part. The crowning device is mounted the full length of the bottom apron of the machine.

Press Brake Crowning (Internal Wave Style)

At JMT we use ‘wave style’ crowning – essentially we have two blocks of steel with a matching wave pattern cut into them. The wave starts out with a very minimal rise and fall at the ends of each block but increases in wave depth towards the middle. When crowning is activated the top block begins sliding so that the waves are no longer nested and the top block rises. Because of the difference in wave height, the middle begins rising higher than the ends, thus compensating for deflection, allowing a consistent bend across the full length of the part.

The R-Series also offer what we call ‘The Big Three’ as standard features (both big in importance and big in size), namely open height, stroke and throat. You normally would have to pay extra for these large capacities as options with other manufacturers.

  • Open Height. This is how far the press brake can open (also known as ‘daylight’). Open height is measured from the bottom of the top ram to the top of the bottom apron above the crowning device. For example, on our 12′ x 242-ton machine we have an open height of 20.87″.
  • Stroke. The stroke is the distance that the cylinders can travel (also known as ‘ram travel’). Our large stroke gives you the ability of long travel eliminating the need for extra tall tooling. Sometimes with a press brake you can have a large open height but a very short stroke which would require taller tooling. With our machine you can make big parts or have multiple flanges on the backside and still be able to easily remove your parts from the machine without having to slide them out the side. For our 12′ x 242-ton machine we have 10.4″ of stroke.
  • Throat Depth. This is the distance from the center of the throat to the center of the die. Throat depth is important because if your part is the full length of the machine and doesn’t fit between the side frames then you are limited on how big the flange can be. For example, we feature a 16″ throat depth standard on our 12′ x 242-ton machine, so if you are bending a 12′ piece on that machine then you have 16″ of throat depth to work with along the full length of the bed (and we can increase the throat depth as an option).

Our brakes feature single piece side frames made out of high yield ST44 Grade 2 steel construction. We don’t weld multiple plates or use a lesser quality steel in our manufacturing, which give us a rugged machines designed for longevity.

Y1/Y2 travel is measured with linear glass scales, which tell us how far the ram is traveling and what position it is exactly at. These scales are attached to external C-frames which compensate for the yaw that occurs in the side frames. Yaw is when there’s pressure from the ram coming down causing the side frames to flex. Having independent C-frames not attached to the side frames allows you to know exactly where the ram is going to be in the bend, ensuring the most accurate bends possible. This is a simple yet very effective design, allowing our machines to hold a +/- .0004″ tolerance.

We utilize a very robust design for our standard back gauge, featuring a rigid one-piece design. Our back gauge measures 25.6″ of travel on the X-axis (with an optional upgrade to 39″). Other features of the back gauge include manual R axis (upgradeable to motorized) and manual Z1/Z2.

Other standard features on the R-Series press brake include:

  • Universal box clamps for holding both American and European tooling. The box clamps in conjunction with sectionalized tooling allows you to do box bending (keeping side flanges from interfering with the tooling or clamps).
  • Front sheet supports that slide along on a linear rail. Many of our competitors have this as a paid option, but it comes standard on all R-Series brakes.
  • Safety laser to meet OSHA standards. These are very easy to work around because the laser beam rides below the bottom of the upper tool. Any interference between the material and the upper beam will stop the machine, keeping the operator safe. We offer an optional upgrade to a manual AKAS system.
